Club members Pat McKenna and Mike Dew will provide the music at the Tin Hut on 9th and 16th December starting around 7.30p.m. Expect everything from B.B. King to Leonard Cohen.

23rd December sees the return of The Troubles – three seriously good musicians who refuse to take themselves seriously. Forget the Christmas shopping for a couple of hours and join in the fun.

Darren Watson CD

Darren Watson and the Real Deal Blues Band are holding a launch party for their new CD “Saint Hilda’s Faithless Boy” at the Ruby Lounge, Bond Street, Wellington, this Thursday (21st). Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show starts at 8.30.

You can see the band play “Love is an Ocean” (3 minutes 50 seconds), and more on YouTube. There should be a link at this point but it doesn’t seem to be working today, so you’ll just have to go there and search for it! Worth the effort.

Hot Club Sandwich

Just received a last-minute reminder from Eric Turner to get along to St. Mark’s Church, Carterton, at 7.30 tomorrow night to see Wellington trio Hot Club Sandwich. You can always expect top shelf entertainment from this swing/jazz group led by the very talented Andrew London. This will be a fundraiser for the new Carterton Community Centre. Tickets from information centres or $25 at the door.

Oli Brown Band at the Ruby Lounge

British electric blues boy wonder Oli Brown and his band will be headlining at the Ruby Lounge in Wellington this Sunday night (15th) at 8.30. Door sales only for $25.

Oli has been nominated in three categories for this year’s British Blues Awards. Check his website, play the video, get there early.

If you’re in the mood for some alt country on Saturday 7th August, pop along to the Lounge in Carterton and catch Henpicked – “three women and a bloke” – from the Kapiti Coast.

Dean Murray, Carylann Martin, Kirsten London and Anje Glindemann – all experienced musicians and songwriters – are currently working on a 14 track CD. Anje admits they aren’t too well known on this side of the Tararuas, so they hope to welcome a big crowd of curious locals. Check the Henpicked myspace page. (Photo supplied)

Arts festival Blues

The Greytown Arts Festival will present an evening of Blues music at Cafe Trends on Sunday 24th January. Festival convenor, Kate McWiggins, writes that it will focus “on the history of the Blues in America from its origins in the plantation fields through Gospel and the country Blues of the Mississippi Delta to the electric Blues of today. You can expect three strong sets progressing through the evolution of the music genre.”

The show will feature “some of our best Wairarapa Blues musicians, including Bob Cooper-Grundy, Kate Marshall and Pat McKenna. Peter Icke of Cafe Trends will be providing food and drink from 5 p.m. onwards.” Music starts at 7.

Tickets cost $15 and are available from undertheradar, Greytown Library, and the Martinborough and Masterton i-sites.

Cafe Trends is on Main Street North, SH2, just outside Greytown.

Another club member-turned-promoter is Rob Maunsell, a.k.a. Doctor Rob, who’s Grafia show will blast the cobwebs out of the Masterton Club again this Thursday night (17th).

Grafia began as a Blues/Arts concept – Get Right Away From It All - rather than a band with a fixed lineup but the name has now stuck to Rob’s ever-changing pool of Blues enthusiasts. Some combinations, lets be honest, were more successful than others, until last month’s gig when the new, improved, six-piece Grafia rocked the house! Those of us lucky enough to be there were still buzzing the next day. Lets hope they stick together and don’t break up a winning team.

This month Mojo Mama from Wellington (see the gallery page) will feature as guest artists. Get there for the 7.30p.m. start.

Club member Stefan Brown wears his promoter hat tomorrow night with the second Shades of Chez Paree show at Taste Cafe, 80 Queen Street, Masterton starting at 7p.m.

For those of you too young to remember, Chez Paree was a popular Wellington venue during the contemporary folk music boom of the ’60s and ’70s where many fine musicians got their first experience of playing before an audience. Stefan and Taste owner, Dean, want to offer the same opportunities to today’s Wairarapa musicians, and audiences who appreciate Blues and folk. They hope this will become a regular fixture, given enough public support. So drop in for a coffee, or one of Dean’s special $20 meal deals, and enjoy the music. Phone (06) 370 1431 to book.
